The ams OSRAM has announced that its OSRAM XLS LR6 LED is now ready for mass production. This LED is part of the company’s XLS (eXchangeable LED Signal Lamp) platform, designed to simplify automotive lighting systems.

The XLS LR6 is a red, plug-and-play LED that meets ECE R128 standards. It produces 180 lumens and comes in a compact, durable package. It fits several rear lighting functions, including tail lights, brake lights, fog lights, turn signals, and centre high-mount stop lights (CHMSLs). The XLS platform now includes more than five types of standardised light sources, each compatible with key vehicle signalling requirements.

To show how this technology works in real applications, the company developed the XLS Demonstrator. This prototype includes:

  • A one-meter light guide lit by a single LR6 module for tail lighting.
  • A rear light design with two light guides—one with an LY5 module for turn signals and another with an LR5 for tail and brake lights.

The XLS platform helps car makers by reducing design complexity and lowering development costs. The LR6’s compact size supports slimmer and more flexible rear light designs, aligning with modern vehicle styles. Its standardised format makes it easy to integrate into existing production lines.

The XLS demonstrator complies with ECE regulations and demonstrates how a single module can illuminate long rear guides, a rising trend in the industry. The prototype has been tested at an industry event in Detroit, drawing strong interest from professionals.

With the XLS LR6 and its supporting modules, carmakers can build lighter, thinner, and more efficient rear lighting systems. The plug-and-play format accelerates design and production while adhering to stringent safety standards. This opens up new possibilities for rear lighting designs that are both practical and visually appealing.
