World’s First Pixel-Based Sound OLED Display

In a development that could redefine multimedia devices, researchers at POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology) have created the world’s first Pixel-Based Local Sound OLED technology. This allows each pixel in an OLED panel to emit different sounds simultaneously—essentially turning the screen into a multichannel speaker array.

Led by Professor Su Seok Choi and Ph.D. candidate Inpyo Hong, the team demonstrated the technology on a 13-inch OLED panel, similar to those used in tablets and laptops. As OLED and QD-display technologies approach maturity, the push is now toward immersive, multisensory experiences. While current devices offer stunning visuals, they still rely on external soundbars or speakers—especially in compact spaces like cars or VR headsets—limiting the potential for immersive audio.

To overcome this, the team integrated ultra-thin piezoelectric exciters directly into the OLED display. These exciters, arranged like pixels, generate localized sound without adding bulk or compromising the panel’s thin profile. This enables crosstalk-free audio, where multiple sounds from different screen areas don’t interfere with each other—unlike current solutions with external hardware.

The technology opens up a host of real-world applications. In vehicles, for example, drivers could hear navigation cues while passengers enjoy music—all from a single display. In mobile or VR devices, audio can dynamically follow user movement, adding to the sense of realism.

Crucially, the team’s successful demo on a commercial-sized panel confirms that the technology is not just theoretical but ready for future deployment. With its slim profile, high-fidelity sound, and ability to deliver spatial audio without external speakers, Pixel-Based Sound OLED could be the next big leap in display innovation.

“Displays are evolving beyond just showing visuals—they’re becoming fully immersive sensory interfaces,” said Professor Choi. “Our Pixel-Based Local Sound OLED technology could be a game-changer for smartphones, laptops, vehicles, and VR applications.”
